Sovereignty as a path for coming home to self
Lately, I’ve been navigating through some internal turbulence, a kind that arises when my nervous system and my intellectual awareness and understanding don’t quite match. In these moments I usually know better, yet my body is still reacting to old patterns. The gap between awareness and embodied knowing can be quite unsettling.
At times the spirals have been uncomfortable, but am learning not to indulge this discomfort, but to be present within it, but to observe, and allow space for new pathways to form, Rewiring takes patience and time.
The other day I went to a class and the theme was about sovereignty, personal sovereignty.
This caught my interest and with me if something catches my interest, I tend to do a deep dive to see how it applies to the whole of my life, my creative work and my practice.
Initially, I found the concept of personal sovereignty at odds with my spiritual path. So much of my spiritual practice is about surrender, letting go and trusting the universe, flowing with life, which is much easier said than done.
But as I’ve explored the meaning of sovereignty more deeply I began to see it differently, not as a control or something rigid, but as an anchor to help me to find ground, a way to live with presence, intention and trust.
WHAT IS SOVERIGNTY?
By definition sovereignty refers to supreme power or authority. It means self-governing., Autonomy or independence.
Historically, it has been used in political and governmental contexts — a sovereign nation, a sovereign ruler, a sovereign state, .
But in a personal, embodied, and spiritual sence, sovereignty takes on a deeper meaning:
-The power to self govern- to make aligned choices from within rather than seekingoutside sources
-The capacity to regulate your inner state reclaiming your nervous system, body, and voice.
-The freedom to live and and create from your genuine essence , rather than perform.
SOVEREIGNTY AS A WAY TO CONNECT WITH THE DIVINE
Sovereignty for me is an opening inward, a way of connecting with the spark of the divine that lives within. It’s about union with Source, and tapping into the deepest part of myself, the whole, free, creative intelligence that breathes live into all things.
SOVEREIGNTY AND HEALING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
The more I claim sovereignty, the more my nervous system naturally begins to settle, and I return to a feeling safety, steadiness and grounded confidence, one breath at at time.
With presence, awareness, and ritual, sovereignty becomes a lived experience, and I begin to trust, to trust my body, my decisions, and my connections.
Not because everything is “perfect”, but because I am at home in myself.
SOVEREIGNTY IN CREATIVE EXPRESSION
In my art, my writing, my yoga flows, sovereign looks like honoring my unique rhythm and voice.
My creativity responds to what I pay attention to. If I listen inward, and follow the thread of the soul, there is no need to chase approval.
But if I begin trying to “keep up” with or mirror what others are doing, or expecting of me, my need will be insatiable, and I will loose myself.
Sovereignty is a decision to return home, to trust what wants to move through means to let my expression be devotional rather that performative.
A PRACTICE FOR RECLAIMING SOVEREIGNTY
Pause
Breathe
Sincerely ask yourself, “Is this coming from my center, or am I chasing something outside of me”?
Let the question be your compass.
